Sir Francis Drake

Road Safety 2016-2017

Our Junior Travel Ambassadors are children in Year 5 who have applied for the position and have then been appointed on the strength of their application.

This year our Junior Travel Ambassadors are Jadon and Naveah.

JTAs are responsible for helping to encourage other children to act responsibly on or near the roads. They help to increase road safety awareness to everyone in the school by:

  • undertaking different surveys to find out what our school community travel issues are.
  • playing a part in putting together the school travel plan
  • keeping a road safety board in school
  • delivering assemblies on different aspects of road safety each term
  • organising road safety activities and competitions to involve other children
  • set an example of good road safety practice
On 12th October 2016 they attended a road safety seminar at the Oval in London, where they collected the silver award that Sir Francis Drake has been awarded for their work around keeping children safe on the roads and raising awareness on road safety. They had to work very hard to come up with new ways to increase awareness and put together an action plan. They learnt different ways to reason and persuade others and road safety games that they could use to teach their friends about road safety.
On 1st December 2016, the JTAs gave an assembly about designing a logo for the STARs initiative. STARs stands for Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe and is part of transport for London's ongoing plan to encourage families to use their cars less on their journey to school. They asked children to take part in the competition and winners would be sent off to TFL to compete with other schools in London to be the new logo for STARs. We would also have some winners within the school.
